Trauma Therapy

Trauma isn’t just what happened — it’s how your body, mind, and heart had to adapt to survive. Whether you’re carrying the weight of a single event or years of painful experiences, trauma therapy offers a safe, supportive space to gently unpack what’s been too heavy to hold alone. Together, we work toward healing, restoring safety in your body, and reclaiming the parts of you that got lost along the way.

Trauma Therapy Tailored to You
There’s no single path to healing from trauma. Blue Flame Wellness can offer a range of proven trauma therapies to support you in a way that fits your needs and goals.

Our team is trained in EMDR, EMDR Intensives (for deeper, more focused healing), TRE (Tension & Trauma Releasing Exercises), as well as DBT, CBT, and ACT for Trauma.

Below, you’ll find more information to help you choose the approach that feels right for you.

EMDR & EMDR Intensive Therapy

EMDR THERAPY

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing.

In EMDR, you’ll think about that upsetting memory while your therapist helps you move your eyes back and forth—usually by following their fingers or a light. Sometimes, they might instead, use tapping or sounds. This back-and-forth movement helps your brain “reprocess” the memory so it’s no longer as upsetting or distressing. You still remember what happened, but it won’t feel so overwhelming anymore.

EMDR INTENSIVE THERAPY

The power of EMDR concentrated over a few days, allowing for deeper, more rapid processing of traumatic memories and distressing emotions.

The Research Behind EMDR Intensives: Backed by Science, Driven by Results.

EMDRs effectiveness is very well-established in RCTs (Randomised Controlled Trials). Various meta-analyses have demonstrated EMDR’s effectiveness in reducing PTSD symptoms. Emerging research supports the efficacy of EMDR intensives. For example, the Journal of EMDR Practice and Research published a case series in 2017, highlighting the benefits of EMDR intensives. Subsequent studies indicate that intensive EMDR can lead to significant reductions in PTSD symptoms, anxiety, and depression in a compressed timeframe.

Key Findings:

  • Reduced PTSD symptom severity in fewer sessions.

  • Faster processing of traumatic memories.

  • Increased emotional regulation and resilience.

  • Improved overall well-being.

Benefits of EMDR Intensives vs. Traditional EMDR Therapy: Why Choose an EMDR Intensive?

While traditional weekly EMDR therapy is effective, intensives offer distinct advantages. By condensing therapy into a shorter period, you can experience a more efficient use of your time, and a faster return to a more balanced life.

Increased safety and connection. A previous client has been quoted as saying “But with the intensive, I was like I can go 100% today, you know. I can go 100% because I know that I’m going to come back tomorrow, and I can, and I can finish this. But if I was doing it weekly, I would go in and maybe give 30% because I knew that if I did 100% I would have a really bad week until the next session” (Butler & Ramsey-Wade, 2024, p. 5).

Comparison Points:

EMDR Intensives:

  • Faster symptom reduction.

  • Deeper, more focused processing.

  • Efficient use of time and resources.

  • Ideal for those with busy schedules.

  • Reduced dropout of treatment.

  • Reduced ‘avoidance behaviour’ that often interferes in weekly EMDR treatment

Traditional EMDR Therapy:

  • Gradual symptom reduction.

  • Slower, spaced-out processing.

  • Requires ongoing weekly commitment.

  • Suitable for long-term, ongoing support.

The Process

Before beginning an EMDR intensive, we conduct a thorough intake assessment to determine your suitability for this accelerated approach. This assessment allows us to understand your specific needs, assess your readiness for intensive therapy, and create a personalised treatment plan. Your subsequent / next session will be focussed on Psychoeducation and preperation for the upcoming EMDR Intensive sessions over the two weeks.

The sessions are: Three 90-minute sessions per week for a minimum of two weeks.

Crucially, to maximise the benefits of EMDR intensives, it is essential to minimise external stressors during this period. We strongly recommend taking leave from work and discussing your needs with family members to reduce household chores and responsibilities, especially concerning childcare. The research evidence following an intensive EMDR session indicates that physical activity/exercise is beneficial, ( Using the time after a session to additional self-care and self-soothing activities will also help.) Overall, these small adjustments in your everyday life allow you to fully focus on your recovery and healing process during the EMDR intensive process.

EMDR intensives can also be conducted while you are in standard therapy with another psychologist. We will work to ensure that your care is coordinated.

TRE - Tension & Trauma Releasing Exercises

Sometimes, the body holds what words can’t express

How it works:

TRE is a gentle, body-based practice that helps release deep tension and stress held in the

muscles. It’s particularly helpful for people who find it hard to talk about their trauma—or who

feel like talking hasn’t been enough.

Through guided exercises that encourage natural trembling responses, TRE can help the

nervous system unwind and reset. Many clients describe it as grounding, calming, and even

transformative.

We offer TRE as a stand-alone approach or alongside traditional therapy, depending on what

feels right for you.

As a body-oriented / somatic approach, Tension & Trauma Releasing Exercises (TRE) can be a powerful tool integrated within your broader psychological therapy at Blue Flame Wellness. When provided by our registered psychologists as part of a Mental Health Treatment Plan, sessions incorporating TRE, alongside other evidence-based strategies, can be eligible for Medicare rebates. Please consult with your GP to obtain a Mental Health Treatment Plan, and we'd be happy to discuss how TRE can complement your personalised therapeutic journey with us.
